India 5 wickets without Bumrah, Australia trail by 4 runs

Australia ended the first day's play in the Sydney Test yesterday at 9 for 1 in 3 overs. Today, Pat Cummins' team was all out for 181 runs in 51 overs in the second session of the second day. India, who scored 185 runs in the first innings, took a lead of 4 runs.

This is the second time in the last 70 years that both teams have been all out for less than two hundred in the first innings in Sydney. The previous time was in the 1979-80 season when England scored 123 runs and Australia scored 145.

Australia scored 92 runs in the first session today, losing 4 wickets in 26 overs. In the fourth over of the day's play, captain Jasprit Bumrah got Marnus Labuschagne (2) caught by wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Australia suffered a big setback after four overs. In that over (12th) by Mohammad Siraj, they lost openers Sam Constas (23) and Travis Head (4) in four balls. From here, debutant Bo Webster and Steven Smith began the work of repairing the innings in a counter-attack. The two put on a 57-run partnership for the fifth wicket off 92 balls.

Shortly before the lunch break, Smith was dismissed by the famous cruncher, just 5 runs away from his personal 10,000 runs in Tests. He scored 33 runs. Webster stood at the crease by then. Webster also scored a fifty on the way to putting up two important partnerships of 41 for the sixth wicket with Alex Carey and 25 for the seventh wicket with Cummins. This was the only fifty in the first innings of both teams. Webster is the second batsman among Tasmanian cricketers to score a fifty on debut (the first was Ricky Ponting).

When Australia  score was 164 for 7 in 46 overs, it still looked like the hosts would take the lead. But India took two wickets in the next two overs and held on. Nitish Kumar dismissed Mitchell Starc with the first ball of the 47th over. Webster, who had made 57 off 105 balls, was caught in the gully by Prasidh in the 48th over.

India's excellent bowling will be appreciated even more for another reason. Bumrah left the field after bowling just one over after the lunch break. The pacer was injured. He had to leave the field and go to the hospital. Without the team's main bowler, India took the remaining 5 wickets of Australia in 20 overs. Siraj and Prasidh took 3 wickets each. Nitish and Bumrah took 2 wickets each.

Short score:

India: 185.

Australia: 181 in 51 overs (Webster 57, Smith 33, Constance 23, Carey 21, Cummins 10, Boland 9, Lyon 7*, Head 4; Siraj 3/51, Prasidh 3/42, Bumrah 2/33, Nitish 2/32)—Second day's play underway.
