Sylhet fails to impress Barisal in Myers-Hridoy pair

Two matches in one day, both low scoring! Compared to the kind of run-flood seen on the first day of Sylhet after Mirpur in this year's BPL, today's 111 and 125-run matches have to be called low-scoring matches.

In both matches, the team that batted first scored the fewest runs. The team that batted later won the match easily. Rangpur Riders defeated Dhaka Capitals, who were all out for 111 runs in the first match, by 7 wickets in 13.2 overs. In the evening match, Sylhet Strikers were all out for 125 runs in 18.2 overs against the current champion Fortune Barisal at home. Barisal completed the ceremony of winning by 7 wickets in 10.3 overs.

However, captain Tamim Iqbal was caught behind on the first ball of Barisal's innings after a ball touched Rakim Cornwall's gloves. Another opener Nazmul Hossain was also caught behind the wicket on the last ball of the next over by Tanjim Hasan.

2 wickets for 6 runs. The gallery of Sylhet International Stadium, which had been a largely silent audience during the Sylhet Strikers' batting, erupted in cheers twice. Is the low-scoring match also going to be dramatic?

Nothing of the sort happened. Because, Kyle Myers-Tawhid Hridoy put on a 116-run partnership for the third wicket. The gallery was stunned again by then. Hridoy was bowled by Tanjim on the verge of victory, otherwise Barisal could have won in 8 wickets. Hridoy scored 48 off 27 balls with two sixes and eight boundaries. Myers, unbeaten on 59 runs, showed his usual devastating form in his 31-ball innings. He hit five boundaries and four sixes.

Of course, watching Sylhet's batting earlier, it didn't feel like a T20 match. Except for George Mansi's exceptional innings of 28 runs off 13 balls, which included three sixes and a four, Sylhet's batting at home has been, in a word, poor.

Captain Ariful Haque hit a striking six over square leg with a flick shot. Ariful hit two more sixes with a boundary. But he needed 29 balls to score 36 runs before being out with the first ball of the 19th over.

The other batsmen have just come down and come up. But it's not like the Sylhet wicket has suddenly started behaving very anti-batting. The ball has come to the bat properly on a wicket with balanced bounce. The team that won by batting later in both matches did not have to struggle to reach its small target.
So why is the team that batted first in that state? In fact, what responsibility does the wicket have to help the batsman if he makes a mistake in playing the shot or plays the shot incorrectly!
