Bumrah and Carr named ICC Cricketer of the Year
Jasprit Bumrah and Amelia Carr had a dream year in terms of individual performances. These two were recognized for that. Indian fast bowler Bumrah was named ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year for the first time. He won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy. New Zealand all-rounder Carr became the women's player of the year for the first time. She won the Rachel Hayhoe Flint Trophy.
On Tuesday, the world cricket governing body ICC announced the names of Bumrah and Carr as the men's and women's players of the year for 2024. Bumrah beat England batsmen Joe Root and Harry Brook and Australian batsman Travis Head in the race to become the best player of the year. Carr beat Sri Lanka women's team captain Chamari Atapattu, South Africa captain Laura Volvert and Australian all-rounder Annabelle Sutherland.
Jasprit Bumrah has become the fifth Indian to be named ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year. But he is the first among the country's pacers. The award, known as the 'Oscars of cricket', was first given in 2004. India's Rahul Dravid was the first to win it. Then Sachin Tendulkar in 2010, Ravichandran Ashwin in 2016 and Virat Kohli won in 2017 and 2018.
While the women's award has been given since 2006, Amelia Carey is the first New Zealand cricketer to receive this recognition
