The ongoing violence in Bangladesh has attracted the attention of members and directors of the International Cricket Council (ICC) who are currently holding their annual assembly in Colombo. They are concerned about street killings and protests, seeing it as an important issue. However, no decision has been made yet regarding the Women's Twenty20 World Cup to be held in Bangladesh at the end of this year.
"We are monitoring the situation closely, but the event is still some time away. The situation seems to have improved over the last 24 hours," an ICC source, currently in Colombo for the ongoing annual conference, told LiveCricketBD.
Ten teams are scheduled to play 23 matches, over 18 days, from October 3 to 20 at two venues in bd, the Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka and the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet. But internet is off in many places. With so many foreign students leaving the country, the concern among ICC officials was understandable.
Although the issue was brought to the attention of Bangladesh Cricket Board officials, it was not on the agenda of the influential board meeting held in Colombo at the time of writing the report. More than 150 people are reported to have been killed in Bangladesh following a recent court order regarding what it described as 'politically motivated admission quotas for coveted government jobs'. The court order led to students taking to the streets in protest, leading to curfews and violence.
The ICC unveiled the World Cup schedule at an event in Dhaka in May, attended by, among others, the captains of the women's teams of India and Bangladesh, Harmanpreet Kaur and Nigar Sultana, respectively. Before the official opening, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met the two captains at her residence to extend her best wishes for the successful hosting of the World Cup. Australia is the defending champion.
