World Cup 2023: Kane Williamson asks Angelo Mathews to check his helmet strap days after 'timed out' controversy New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and veteran Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews shared a funny moment on the field when Williamson asked the former Sri Lanka skipper to check his helmet’s strap just days after he became the first player to be timed out in international cricket. ICC Cricket World Cup, 2023, Match 41 Match Ended New Zealand 172/5 (23.2) vs Sri Lanka 171 (46.4) New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by 5 wickets

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and veteran Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews shared a funny moment on the field when Williamson asked the former Sri Lankan captain to check his helmet strap just days after becoming the first player in international cricket. Williamson and Trent Boult shared a laugh with Mathews as they walked out to bat against New Zealand in their ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The two players greeted Mathews on the field and joked about his helmet strap, which made the Sri Lankan all-rounder laugh. lRead More Cricket News live Cricket match today England vs Netherlands 40th Match

Mathews came in to bat in the ninth over after Sri Lanka lost the wicket of Charith Asalanka. Boult has found his feet in the opening powerplay of this World Cup, claiming just three wickets in eight matches in the first 10 overs before this game. However, the left-arm pacer got the Kiwis off to a flying start with three wickets in the powerplay against Sri Lanka.

Mathews was timed out in Sri Lanka's previous match against Bangladesh. He was dismissed without facing a delivery as time ran out in New Delhi.

Mathews came in to bat at number 6 and experienced a problem with his helmet strap, which meant he could not take the crease in the required time, prompting the Bangladesh players to appeal. After their appeal, on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth chatted with each other and decided to dismiss Matthews. Matthews was then seen having an emotional argument with umpires Erasmus and Illingworth, saying he had a problem with his helmet strap, but was asked to leave the field.

So we've narrowed down our semi-finalists barring the extraordinary. Pakistan are pretty much the only other contenders but their NRR situation looks pretty hopeless, they should beat England by an unimaginable margin regardless of whether they bat first or second so New Zealand can rest easy - in all likelihood, they will face India at the Wankhede. For Sri Lanka, it sums up a very disappointing campaign. Their qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy seems to be in dire jeopardy and they will also be praying for that Pakistani miracle to push England's NRR below their own. That's all we've got for you tonight, we hope you enjoyed our coverage. It is signed on behalf of Anurag Kumar, Ramakrishnan and Vinod. Take care and goodbye. Rachin Ravindra speaking to the official broadcaster: It's a pretty surreal feeling. Playing in Bangalore with my extended family is always special and I won't take it for granted when the crowd chants your name. Being compared to the great (Sachin Tendulkar) is something I never dreamed of. Luckily it all worked out. 6 to 12 months ago I was not in the frame. Admirations and individualities aside, it's good to be in the playoffs. [Taking his 10-far catch to Azaz in that Test] The most nerve-wracking moment of my career. I was lucky to catch that, it was all Ajaz work. I was lucky to be here in my teenage years, the practice wicket experience - helped me a lot. Nice wicket and quick outfield, try to adapt as much as I can. Talk to Devon, talk to Kane who played in the IPL, I'll get golden nuggets from them whenever I can. It's still water under the bridge and we'll be watching those games. I idolized Kane, idolized a lot of guys in this World Cup, Kohli, Root, Steve Smith and I felt like oh, I'm playing with them. I'm lucky to have that freedom from guys. Thanks to Chinnaswamy Stadium and visitors for all the support. It has a special place in my heart and I look forward to playing more cricket here. Kane Williamson New Zealand captain: Really good performance. Early wickets and spin in those middle overs were a challenge. The pitch really slowed down later. The boys showed some good intent in the chase and overall a great performance. We thought there would be some weather later but there was no weather. This kind of stuff is hard to read. We are happy that we were able to take wickets, people like Perera can take the game away from you. Always great to get our 5th and 6th spinners into the game, a great effort overall. Few teams can finish on the same point, it's about control. Hopefully we can get a few days off, we'll be walking around, not really sure what we'll do. Hopefully if things go our way it will be great to be involved in the semis. Will look forward to the challenge.

Kusal Mendis Sri Lanka captain: (translated) We lost 4 wickets in the first 10 overs and that's what got us into trouble. We could easily get 300 on this pitch. Madushanka bowled really well but it was difficult to take wickets as we were defending small totals. Enjoyed the captaincy, disappointed with my performance but overall enjoyable. Very happy to see the players put their hands up and perform.

This is New Zealand's eighth consecutive win against Sri Lanka in ODIs.

Trent Bolt | PoTM: Nice to have some success at the top there (new ball). Big game, must win for us, joy getting that result, yes good night. It is a challenging format, challenging part of bowling open world. I think I used my experience in some parts of the game. Nice to be on the decent side of it tonight. The biggest challenge here (India) is always to come to terms with the different conditions and situations that change throughout the tournament. Everyone wants the host nation, they are playing fantastic cricket. Time will tell what happens there (playing India in the semi-finals). I am sure it will be an exciting game

Guaranteed win-loss streak for New Zealand. They are back on track and all set to make it to the semi-finals. Disappointment not only for Sri Lanka but also for Afghanistan and Pakistan who will surely be on the sidelines. Afghanistan are effectively out of the competition and Pakistan will have to pull off a miracle against England. So New Zealand will feel confident, it did a good job today. 172 was never going to be a challenging chase, especially on a primitive batting deck and they set themselves up with a brilliant performance with the ball. Ravindra and Conway were free-flowing at the top of the order and once they got to sharing a stand of 86 with the new ball, Sri Lanka really had no chance. Mitchell comes in and lands a few strikes before Phillips applies a cover to end things. Sri Lanka needed early wickets to play and they didn't get them. Madushanka, who has been so brilliant all tournament, finished wicket-less and even though 5 wickets eventually fell, New Zealand were never in trouble. The defeat also dashed Sri Lanka's hopes of a place in the Champions Trophy, a heavy defeat by England for Pakistan would push them below Sri Lanka who would otherwise be 9th in the table.
