Mahmudullah developed into one of the five pillars of Bangladesh cricket in the post-2010 time of development and relative success. A center request hitter who bowls useful offspin, he is also one of Bangladesh's best fielders ever. Mahmudullah's numbers put him in the advanced gathering of allrounders who have accumulated 10,000 runs, 100 wickets and 100 catches in international cricket across formats.

He showed capacity in various batting positions and, combined with his handiness with the ball, that made him invaluable to Bangladesh in the 2010s. He finished as Bangladesh's sixth-highest run-scorer in Tests when he suddenly resigned from the organization in 2021. Mahmudullah also captained Bangladesh, in T20Is predominantly. Whether captain or not, partners over the course of the years commended Mahmudullah for being a characteristic chief and a shrewd thinker about the game.
