No Plan To Postpone BCB Elections Even After Constitutional Amendment
Bangladesh Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud said on Friday that they are working on the process of amending the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB)
Bangladesh Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud said on Friday that they are working on the process of changing the BCB constitution but stressed that there are no plans to delay the BCB elections scheduled for October at the moment.
Faced with criticism, the BCB suspended all activities of the previous constitution reform committee headed by director Nazmul Abedin on January 25 this year.
The National Sports Council formed a committee on June 24 to prepare recommendations for updating the constitution and affiliation policies of the federations under the NSC.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on June 24, the committee is headed by the Additional Secretary (Sports-1) of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Its members include sports organizer Md. Jobaidur Rahman Rana, deputy press secretary to Hon'ble Chief Advisor Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, Bangladesh Supreme Court barrister Sheikh Mahadi, Bangladesh Wushu Federation vice-president retired Lt. Col. Abu Ayub Mohammad Hasan, Gymnastics Federation general secretary Habibur Rahman and National Sports Council director (sports) who will serve as member secretary.
The committee has been directed to submit a report to the ministry within 30 working days. The order, issued in public interest and approved by the competent authority, will come into effect immediately.
"We are working on the process of changing the constitution," Asif told reporters on Friday.
"Decentralization should be done in such a way that no stakeholder is harmed. Those who are contributing to cricket should not be harmed in this process. We want to change the constitution through a constitutional process and consultation with appropriate stakeholders," he added.
However, the Youth and Sports Advisor suggested that the elections will depend on the constitutional amendment process.
"It depends on the [BCB elections] process, whether it will be earlier or later," he said.
"There is no reason to delay the elections yet. We cannot say at this time what the situation will be in October (whether we will be able to hold the elections on time) but if necessary, we can talk to the ICC," he said.
"We want to conduct the elections (BCB) on time," he added
