Pakistan Loses 5 Points, Bangladesh Gains in Latest Cricket Rankings
Pakistan have received another piece of bad news after their Test series defeat in South Africa. The team has been deducted 5 points in the World Test Championship for slow over-rate; at the same time, all the team players have been fined 25% of their match fees. The ICC announced this punishment today.
Pakistan lost to South Africa by 10 wickets in the Cape Town Test yesterday. The ICC said that Shan Masood's team was five overs behind the desired over-rate in the stipulated time of the match. After the match, the umpires complained to the match referee Richie Richardson against Pakistan. Captain Masood Richardson admitted his fault, so there was no need for a formal hearing.
Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship Playing Conditions states that if a team is one over below the desired over-rate in the stipulated time, one point will be deducted. The Pakistan team was deducted 5 points because it was five overs behind in the Cape Town Test.
Apart from this, Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct states that if a team is 1 over behind the desired over-rate, a fine of 5% of the match fee will be imposed on each team. Accordingly, Babar-Rizwan's match fee has been deducted by 25% for Pakistan's five overs short.
Pakistan has been deducted 13 points in the 2023-25 Test Championship cycle for this. Bangladesh has benefited from the deduction of 5 points from Babar-Rizwan today. Bangladesh, which finished the previous two cycles at the bottom of the points table, is unlikely to experience that embarrassing experience again this time.
Bangladesh is currently seventh in the list with 31.25 points. Pakistan is eighth with 24.31 points and West Indies are ninth with 24.24 points. Bangladesh has no more matches left in this cycle. The two bottom teams, Pakistan and West Indies, will face each other in their last series in this cycle in January. Whatever the result of that two-match series, there is no possibility of Bangladesh dropping below eight in the points table.
Pakistan and West Indies, who have long since been knocked out of the finals of the Test Championship, are set to end the series in ninth place. The first Test between the two teams in Multan begins on January 17. South Africa and Australia will face off in the final at Lord's next June.
