Match: PAK vs SL, 8th Match, ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
Date: Tuesday, October 10, 2023
Time: 11:30 AM
Venue: Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad
As foreign as it is for Pakistani players to play in India, the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad will not be as foreign when they face Sri Lanka on Tuesday. In the last two weeks, they have played three matches at the venue, even if they haven't come close to their best possible performances.
Sri Lanka are not an opposition team they will mind playing against. Not only have they beaten their Asian opponents in eight of their last nine matches, they are a team that has never beaten Pakistan in a World Cup. Being on the other side of the spectrum against India, Pakistan knows a thing or two about the psychological benefits that come with this historical commodity.
Pakistan head coach Grant Bradburn insisted that the form of the fast bowlers overshadowed the improved performance of their middle order. He is not far from the truth. This has been the best year for the middle order since the 2019 World Cup. But worst for their top order too. Babar Azam managed to score only 61 runs in the last 4 ODIs, although the poor form of the openers was well highlighted. A concern for Pakistan, an opportunity for Sri Lanka to pounce and gain an early advantage.
It's still early days of the tournament and there's already some early momentum, albeit negligible by and large. In the tournament opener in Delhi, South Africa will play Sri Lanka without their bowling attack. Even when the batsmen put up a respectable score, it was not enough to challenge the opposition. Mahesh Thekshan's possible return will be good news for them, but it will create some minor selection dilemmas. Will they go with three frontline pacers or will Thikshanna and Dunith Wellage both back?
More importantly, can they reverse the momentum, break the winless streak and get their World Cup campaign going? This will be their last game at the now familiar venue for Pakistan before heading to the hot weather of Ahmedabad and Chennai. And they will hopefully leave town with less anxiety than they came with.
