Wanindu Hasaranga quit Sri Lanka captaincy
Wanindu Hasaranga has stepped down as the captain of Sri Lanka's T20 team just six months after taking charge. The 26-year-old all-rounder did not give a specific reason for his resignation, but the board's statement said it was in the "larger interest of Sri Lankan cricket".
Wanindu Hasaranga, who got the T20 captaincy late last year, said, 'Sri Lanka will always get the best of me as a player. As always, I will support the team and the leadership in the future.
Sri Lanka played 10 T20Is under Wanindu Hasaranga's six-month leadership, including the recently concluded T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka was eliminated from the first phase of the World Cup held in USA and West Indies. After the World Cup, the team's coach Chris Silverwood and consultant Mahela Jayawardene resigned. Former captain Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as the interim coach.
Sri Lanka will play a three-match T20I series against India at home in the last week of this month. The team for the series, which starts on July 26, is yet to be announced. Wanindu Hasaranga left the leadership earlier. Charit Asalanka is believed to be the captain of T20. Asalanka led the team in two matches against Bangladesh in March when Wanindu Hasaranga was banned for two matches for misconduct with the umpire last February.
The press release of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board said that Wanindu Hasaranga will continue to be an important part of Sri Lanka's international cricket plan despite leaving the leadership.
